To qualify for the SR&ED program, your work must be conducted in Canada, and be either of the following:

  • Basic Research: To advance scientific knowledge without practical application, commonly done by academics and research specialists
  • Applied Research: To advance scientific knowledge with a practical application
  • Experimental Development (most common): To achieve technological advancement, develop new products or processes or improve existing one

The bottom line – your SR&ED work should help you resolve a problem or uncertainty through a planned experiment, based on an idea or concept, and entail systematic research to advance science or technology. We can help you highlight these requirements in describing your operations on the application.

In case you’re wondering, SR&ED is NOT:

  • Market research
  • Quality control
  • Social science or humanities research
  • Searching for minerals or natural gas
  • Commercial production
  • Style changes
  • Routine date collection
